Cholesterol Drug & Muscle Pain

A single dose of cholesterol lowering drug causes painful muscle

Croft Woodruff

1: Heart. 2004 Jan;90(1):e3.

Rhabdomyolysis induced by a single dose of a statin.

Jamil S, Iqbal P.

Medical Directorate, Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Royal Hospital NHS Calow, Chesterfield, UK.

Statins have been shown to cause myotoxicity and rhabdomyolysis. In most cases rhabdomyolysis occurs following the use of these drugs for at least one week. A case of rhabdomyolysis after just a single dose of simvastatin is reported.

I am 63 with high Cholestrol. The Dr. put me on quite a few diffrent brands of statins for the past 4 years. Sometimes two at a time.I ended up on Crestor. I got so weak during these 4 years that it was hard for me to do anything. My hips and ancles hurt anytime I walked. My husband had to do all the shopping.Just to comb my hair was a painful chore.I was turning into a cripple and thought seriously about a wheelchair to get around. I never associated my problem with the cholesterol medicine I was takeing untill I ran out of pills .The next day after no pill, I felt better! I have been off statin drugs for 4 months now and was able to go to the grocery store and shop with no pain for the first time in 4 years. I will never take another statin pill.

I have been taking Lipitor for a long time. My muscles hurt like crazy. Especially my calves.
Could this be from Lipitor?
How long should I be off of it to determine if it is hurting me or not. I can hardly walk and have been in continuous pain for three years now. Help!

I have been on Lipitor for years. First 10 then 20 then 40 and now 80. All along I have been feeling tired but attributed to the aging process. However two months ago when I was told to increase my dosage to 80mg I developed cramps in my lower back and in my large muscle groups. I called my Doctor last night at 10pm and she told me to stop taking Lipitor at once. We will then follow up with blood tests to check my cholesterol and liver. I hope that the pain subsides as it has been difficult to live with. I awake tired and struggle through the day.

Anyone who has had similar experiences and has stopped taking Lipitor, please let me know if there was a change in your condition( ie muscle cramps). Many thanks, Allan (alanwachtel@aol.com)

I took 20 mg of Lipitor for about one year. I have suffered with muscle aches and pains since that time. Some days I ache all over. I have no history of any medical problems other than high cholesterol. I am 54 and some days I feel 104. It is odd that I can do 30 minutes on the treadmill at a 4.5 miles per hour and feel better afterward. That evening I will be achey all over again. I am at my wits end. Does these sound familiar to anyone? It is not constant so I am baffled. Blood tests show nothing unusual.

Great news. This is a follow up on my post of September 10, 2005.

My blood tests showed that there was no muscle damage from taking Lipitor. However I was taken off of Lipitor and am now taking Vitorin 10/40. My mucsles no longer ache. I no longer have to struggle through the day. My total cholesterol is and unbelievable 123 with an excellent hdl/ldl ration of 2.6 What a difference. Happy to report thatI feel like a new man.

I have been taking 10mg Lipitor for more than 5 years and been very physicaly active. In the past year, I have had a rotator cuff tear, increasing muscle cramping in my calves and now I am developig signifficant knee problems. I have recently linked several of these problems to complaints from other Lipitor patients and am very concerned about the potential link.

I just stopped taking it, how long should I wait to do a blood test that would give me an accurate reading without any vytorin? Also,How important is the ratio? My HDL is always high

I have been taking Lipitor for 7 years. I am very active. Excersize daily on a treadmill. After a while I expierenced leg cramping as well as cramping on top of my feet. I began using an eliptical machine. This eliminated the cramps. However when doing alot of walking my legs get fatigued, especially my feet. I believe this is a statin problem. My doctor sent me for an MRI believing my pain was due to a back condition. MRI was normal. I am taking myself gradually off Lipitor to see if there is improvement.

I started taking Vytorin some time in December 2005, I started having feet and leg cramps. Getting worse and worse and having them more often than not and always at night. I wonder if these may be caused from taking Vytorin.

I wonder after reading all the coments of Choleterol control, if there is any drug that do not affect behaviour or add pain to the body?

I need to know if anyone has experienced so much muscle pain (seems to be isolated to the right thigh, buttocks, lower back area) after being OFF Crestor for a couple of weeks. I stopped taking Crestor on the advice of my doctor when I complained about muscle cramping at the beginning of April. But now, two weeks later, I feel more fatigued and exhausted than I did before - the cramping seems to be getting worse. Has anyone had this happen to them?

Connie,

I am expierencing the same feeling of tight chest muscles on the right side then moves over to the left side. These symtoms started 2 weeks into my medication. As soon as I felt my chest tightened, I notified my doctor and he requested my muscles and liver checked. It came back ok. I am a 40yr old male and have been on Zocor for 1 1/2 months. I never had this feeling before.

But now I am feeling aches everywhere in my body. It started with the right knee about 4 weeks ago and has progressed up to the chest and elbows. I am going to cut back on the amount of Lipitor I take from once a day to maybe once a week (10mg). I feel like an old man.

To Norma:
You said you went off Lipitor, but still have muscle pain in your theighs. I was wondering how long ago is it that you went off the lipitor. I have muscle pains also, same place as yours but also behind the legs, and buttocks. Real bizare. I stopped taking zocor, complained bitterly and finally put on Zetia, which works on the intestine instead, to lower cholesterol, because my doctor insisted I do something about my cholesterol. She was not happy about the Zetia, saying it would not do the same job. I hope my lab work will prove her wrong. The good news about Zetia is that it has lessened the muscle pain mostly, except at night time when the pain gets most intense and keeps me awake.

Posted by: Hadie on May 10, 2006 08:12 PM

All the statins and Zetia are very dangerous drugs. I was on numerous statins, pravachol, zorcor, crestor and finally zetia. I had serious side effects of short term memory loss with 40mg of statins, and even one episode of amnesia. It was very scary (I was drivng a car at time!!). I also became depressed (another side effect), and my doctor insisted I take Zetia. I am now experiencing muscle pain in the calfs and stopped Zetia a week ago...muscle pain has not subsided yet. I will call my doctor tomorrow morning.

I was on Zocor for 2 years and then was switched to Vytorin 2 years ago due to family history of the high cholesterol. I have been having a problem with the muscles in my right thigh for 3 years now and have had every scan ( MRI AND CT) done and nothing has ever shown up. I mentioned this numerous times to my doctor and they assurred me it was not due to the cholesterol medicine. In the last 6 months I have now developed soreness all the time in my shoulders back, knees you name it !!! I went to a new primary care physician and they told me yesterday to stop taking the Vytorin as it may be the cause of my problems. In reading the posts on this site for once I dont feel alone anymore. I am amazed that these products are allowed to be marketed the way they are with all the problems they are causing. I am 45 and otherwise very healthy and use to be very active. Maybe I will be that way again soon.... I hope so.

I have now stopped taking Lipitor. I developed severe leg pain after several years. I got up one morning and could barely walk, I also had burning sensations in my legs at night. I took myself off the drug, and saw a little improvement in one leg. Then it moved to my good leg, and now both are sore. There has been some improvement. What I am wondering now is how long is it going to be before I am totally normal again. I had been taking the drug for years, and am wondering if it is going to take a while to get it all out of my system. I firmly believe if I had continued on the drug that I would be a cripple. When I look back on it, I think I had been having problems all along, and just thought it was old age.

I have been on Lipitor for only a little over 1 month and stopped taking it last night. My knees hurt so bad, my arms and legs and lower back ached. My muscles felt similar to how they feel when you have the flu. I already feel better today after not taking it last night. Not great but better. How can you be expected to excersise when your muscles hurt so bad???

I am a 67 yr. old male and have been taking lipitor for 3-4 years. I too have experienced severe muscle pain in my calves and feet. The information in this web site gives a lot of credence to a possible connection between lipitor (statins) and leg pain. I have had to take a lot of pain medicine in order to alleviate the discomfort I have experienced. Any ideas? I have reduced the lipitor dosage to 20 mg and am considering giving up on it altogether.

A week of severe lower-leg cramps waking me up at 4 AM began after I had been taking CRESTOR for a few days. Those symptoms disappeared a couple of days after I stopped taking the drug. See the info about this exact problem at www.cholesterolscore.com

Wow! I'm glad I found this site! I have been having some pains in my neck (feels like a vein is being stretched) my elbows always hurt, my feet are hot at night, lately I've had trouble getting to sleep, I've got a constant mild ringing in my ears (no history of high blood pressure,) and I walk like an old woman (stiff footed.) I was on Lipitor for 3 years, then my doctor switched me to Vytorin 10/40 a year ago to get my ratio better. I've felt so old, tired, weak, and sore lately. The only thing I knew about it & Lipitor was not to drink grapefruit juice. I decided to google Vytorin 10/40 and happened upon this site. Thank goodness I haven't had too much of the horrible cramping y'all have, but alot of my other complaints seem common. I may try tapering off the Vytorin. Do any of you have that neck pain I described, or the ringing in your ears? I feel much better just knowing I may not be as old as I have been feeling!!!

I have been on Crestor for quite a while. Within the past few months I developed dibilating muscle pain and stiffness. So much so that I literally "tripped over my own feet" because I couldn't lift my legs. I fell and hurt myself pretty badly. Frankly I thought I had a muscle disorder like ALS. The symptoms seemed to be the same. Although I had always heard the disclaimer about muscle pain on Crestor commercials but it was an article on AOL (last week) that saved me. I clicked on it and the article descrbed my symptoms, and how I felt, perfectly. In fact it said that these symptoms can mimic ALS and/or Muscular Dystrohpy. I work in a hospital so I ran down to the primary care clinic and told the doctor my symptoms and how I felt. Thank goodness he believed me. My blood tests came back negative, however I am in a small group that have the symptoms but normal blood tests. I haven't taken Crestor for about a week now. I feel like a different person! In fact I started feeling better a couple of days after I first stopped the medication. If you feel like this please tell your doctor! I couldn't lift my legs to walk or get up from a chair. I walked "waddling" from side to side instead of picking up my legs -- that's how I fell! This damage can be permanent if left unchecked. Last night I made dinner when I came how from work for the first time in weeks!! I have many allergies and sensitivities to medications -- please believe me when I tell you a sensitivity to medication, and its symptoms, can appear at any time, even if you have been on that medication for a long time. If you suddenly don't feel well or have odd symtoms tell your doctor.

I am a 45 year old male. I have high cholesterol and have been on statins for years. Zocor caused constant pain in my legs but my doctor wouldn't agree until I just quit. I took lipitor and zetia for over 2 years with no side effects that I noticed. My insurance company switched me to vitorin and it didn't work but my back and buttocks began hurting. My doctor switched me to crestor and my lower back and buttocks hurts constantly. My friend told me those were his side effects and said quit taking it. It is now 5 days later and I no longer have muscle pain at all. I feel like a 20 year old. I can finally sleep. My doctor had prescribed skelaxin as a muscle relaxer and I constantly took ibuprophen. I am sure these medicines did more damage than high cholesterol can. At least I can enjoy life now. Thanks, Johnny
