Aspartame and GM bacteria
Aspartame, the FDA approved legal poison found in "diet" soft drinks, is made using genetically modified bacteria, charges Patrick Rattigan, a UK based homeopath and naturopath, who is known for his opposition to what he calls "the Cancer Business" and his work with The Nutritional Cancer Therapy Trust.
Rattigan has written a one-page fact sheet (Download file) on Aspartame in which he describes Aspartame disease as "a global epidemic". Dr. James Bowen contends that "The only responsible action would be to immediately take aspartame off the market, fully disclose its toxicities, offer full compensation to the injured public and criminally prosecute anyone who participated in the placement of aspartame on the market. That includes those who work so dilligently to keep it there ...".
Aspartame, first produced by biotech giant Monsanto and contained in diet drinks, was approved by the same FDA that is now dragging Jason Vale before a New York Federal Court for selling ... apricot seeds!
I ask: might something be amiss with our "health authorities"?
Rattigan on 12 July asked Tesco Stores Ltd. a question:
"What is Tesco policy re genetically-engineered ingredients in own-brand or other foods and drinks?"
Tesco's reply, sent on 14 July, was:
In April 1999, Tesco announced plans to remove GM ingredients from all own brand products. This extensive process has now been completed, and no Tesco products are being made with GM ingredients.
At the outset Tesco decided to re-formulate all products to remove GM ingredients, rather than simply de-list a number of popular lines. Tesco brand covers over 15,000 lines - so this process has taken longer than other supermarkets that have much smaller ranges. We have now checked the entire supply base and re-formulated the small proportion of products that contained GM ingredients to remove them.
It is possible that a small number of products are still in our stores though we expect these will only last for a few months. All are fully labelled to say that they contain GM ingredients and/or derivatives, so individual customers can make a choice.
Tesco does not operate under a "GM-free" banner at the moment because we believe it confuses customers. Like other supermarkets, we sell a large number of branded products. Our policy of not using GM ingredients can not extend to cover these other brands, so we still encourage customers to check the labels of branded products if they want to avoid GM ingredients.
We are now focusing our attention on GM ingredients in animal feed, and additives and derivatives (which, incidentally, are not "in almost all Tesco-brand products" as GM Food Concern suggest)....
Asked whether Aspartame was labelled GM, a reply on 15 July states:Aspartame must be labelled if it is present in products. It will either be labelled as Aspartame or E951.
If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us.
The question had been:"Tesco-branded drinks contain the neurological poison, aspartame. Aspartame is made, by Monsanto, from genetically-engineered bacteria. How does this fit in with claims that no Tesco own-brand products are made with GM ingredients?"
Rattigan also asked Sainsbury'sre "GE-free own-brands"
Aspartame, a neurological poison, is made from genetically-enginereed bacteria, by Monsanto.see attachment
The reply, dated 19 July 2003:If one of our products contains aspartame we will show the term 'with sweeteners' in the products description as a subtitle, to meet legal requirements. Aspartame will also be clearly listed in the product's ingredient panel (occasionally, where space is limited, E951 will be listed instead), and any product containing aspartame will also carry the statement 'contains a source of phenylalanine'. This warning is for the small percentage of the population who suffer for phenlyketoneurea, a rare hereditary disease.

Aspartame is a low calorie sweetener. Called a potent neurotoxin by several researchers, it is being sold as a sugar substitute for those on low calorie diets and for diabetics. If you like Coke or Pepsi "light", you certainly are at risk, but both industry and health officials deny that there is any truth to this story. Manufacturers have recently been sued in California. Trade names for Aspartame are NutraSweet,... [read more]
