Depleted uranium is the "less rich" uranium that remains as waste in the uranium enrichment process. The metal is radioactive and stays so for billions of years. According to the Sierra Club's Nuclear Waste information, there are massive quantities that need to be either stored or re-cycled.
Could it be that the need to re-cycle the dangerous material plays a part in the U.S. military's decision to use thousands of tons of the dangerous metal in munitions and missiles, in tank armor and bunker-busting bombs?
But uranium may be coming home to roost. More and more veterans are complaining of radiation-induced symptoms. Melissa Sterry, a Gulf War veteran, describes her experience in testimony before Connecticut lawmakers:
"On the outside, I look perfectly normal - on the inside, my body is destroying itself."

Uranium Munitions Are Weapons of Mass Destruction - Use Is A War Crime: Experts
The US and their allies in the war against Iraq have used thousands of tons of radioactive 'depleted' uranium in munitions and missiles, endangering the lives of both civilians and US troops, and leaving a legacy of contamination on the ground that certainly classifies them as illegal weapons of mass destruction, charge international experts.
Cancer, respiratory diseases and horrible birth defects have been widespread in Iraq even after Gulf War I and are bound to increase. While officially, only 467 soldiers were wounded during the first Gulf War, according to Terry Jemison at the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), of the more than 592,560 discharged personnel who served there, at least 179,310 - one third - are receiving disability compensation and over 24,760 additional cases were pending as of September 2004.
The Western press is largely mum about depleted uranium and the genocidal effects of its use in warfare, with a only few notable exceptions, many linked and quoted in an earlier article on this site. The experts' views have now been pulled together in a recent article by Shaheen Chughtai, published on Al Jazeera's website.
This is one of the big health issues of our times, quite apart from justifications or their lack - for a war against the sovereign nation of Iraq. We need to open our eyes to the evidence and our hearts to the suffering - before it is too late to find a remedy.

Mad Cow in the US: We're going to D.C.
The man who killed the mad cow - Dave Louthan - has been doing his nut to break through the apparent government cover-up of mad cow in the US. Without any appreciable result.
"I talked to anybody who would listen. TV, radio, the papers, Congress, state and federal, the internet. Everybody I could think of. I must have done a thousand interviews but nothing changed. Old dairy cows kept getting slaughtered and eaten and not a single solitary BSE test was done. Not one. There was no public outcry. No laws changed. No feeding practices were stopped. Nothing."
So Dave took a break and went back to driving a truck.
"I'm a truck driver by trade. Cow killing was just one of those little side trips life takes sometimes. So I'm driving around listening to the radio and all I hear is Iraq, Iraq, Iraq, Iraq. Some more of our kids killed. Some more of their kids killed. Nothing else."
Only venting his pent-up anger? Maybe, but he is doing the only thing he logically can do - looking at the next level of corruption. If mad cow can be covered up, and if a war can be fought with no good reason - against the will of people the world over and even people in the US, the question soon arises: Who's driving the bus? Read Dave's take on it and his idea of how to forge ahead.

WHO Blocked Depleted Uranium Study
Depleted but nevertheless radioactive and potentially deadly uranium has been used in genocidal weapons by the US led coalition of "freedom loving" nations in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq. A scientific report warning of the dangers to health of the fine uranium dust which remains after explosion has been blocked from publication by the World Health Organisation, according to Keith Baverstock, a senior radiation adviser of the international organisation. The story broke in the Sunday Herald and has found echo on the Axis of Logic site, but not in the US press.
According to the study, the tiny particles of DU which remain after the explosion of shells and warheads fashioned out of the heavy metal, are likely to be blown around in the arid climate of Iraq and could be inhaled by civilians for years to come. Once inside the body, their radioactivity and toxicity could trigger the growth of malignant tumors.
The World Health Organization's Dr. Repacholi, also known as a staunch supporter of the innocuity of cell phones' microwave radiation, dismissed allegations of a cover-up as "totally unfounded". Read the article by Bob Edwards, Environment Editor of the Sunday Herald:
